Stevens - four-time semi-finalist in Sheffield. (6) Matthew Stevens
World Ranking: 6 Provisional Ranking: 6 Date Of Birth: 11/09/77 World Championship Best: Runner-up - 2000 Sheffield has often been a happy hunting ground for Stevens who reached his fourth Crucible semi-final in last year's tournament.
Stevens hopes of glory were ended when he was edged out 17-15 by Graeme Dott in an epic semi-final battle.
Despite his consistent performances in Sheffield the World Championship title has always eluded the Welshman.
Having reached the 2000 final Stevens led countryman Mark Williams 13-7 but had to settle for the runners-up prize after losing 18-16.
It was not until last season that Stevens won a ranking event but victory in the Travis Perkins UK Championships ended that unwanted record.
Stevens has long been considered one of the finest players on the circuit with his 2000 Masters success being the previous highlight of his career.
The 27-year-old suffered a slow start to this season but since the turn of the year his form has improved.
Having reached the last four of the Malta Cup, Stevens then marched to the final of the Irish Masters only to lose to Ronnie O'Sullivan.
His upturn in form, coupled with his excellent record at the Crucible, means he will be a dangerous opponent in Sheffield. | |
